Standard Pattern Technical Editing

The following items are included with every pattern TE job

Numbers

Each and every number in the pattern is checked to make sure that they are correct and none are missing.

  • Are all the stitch counts correct?

  • Do the finished measurements given match what the gauge and instructions would yield?

  • Do the yardages listed make sense?

  • Do numbers provided in both metric and imperial match? (includes measurements, yardages, needle sizes)

  • Are numbers provided for every size?

Instructions

All instructions are checked for completeness and accuracy.

  • Are there any missing sections or instructions?

  • Do the photos of the sample match what the instructions will yield?

  • Do the written instructions match any charted instructions provided?

  • Are all symbols used in charts defined in the chart key?

Words

All sections are edited for clarity and uniformity.

  • Do the instructions make sense?

  • Are they clear, easy to follow, and unambiguous?

  • Are abbreviations defined clearly and used consistently?

  • Are there any typos, spelling, or grammatical errors?

  • Is the same language used consistently? (e.g. do you use “cast off” in one place and “bind off” in another?)

Style

Pattern style is checked for consistency.

  • Is US or UK spelling and grammar used consistently throughout?

  • Are numbers always provided using the same formatting? (e.g. round vs square brackets for multiple sizes, or imperial always followed by metric)

  • Is the formatting consistent? (e.g. are all row instructions started with a capital or lower case?

  • Are the abbreviations consistent with one another and between charts and written instructions? (e.g. are they always written with all lower or all upper case letters?)
